INBELKULT TURNS 100

The Institute of Belarusian Culture (Inbelkult) was founded a century ago. It is the first academic institution in Belarus in modern history. Inbelkult has opened up a people with its own language, culture, history and a country with its nature and subsoil to the locals and to the whole world. In 1928 the Institute was transformed into the Belarusian Academy of Sciences.

HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF INBELKULT

The achievements of the Institute are not limited to academic ones – Inbelkult led a broad intellectual, cultural and national movement and started a process of self-discovery for the Belarusian people. It was the creator of a knowledge system, a generator and exponent of ideas, an active, lively and creative response to which determined the new configurations of Belarusian culture and formed a national ideology. Aliaksandar Hrusha, Director of the Central Science Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, will talk about the activities of the institution, its achievements, as well as the transformation of Inbelkult into the Belarusian Academy of Sciences.

DIGITAL COLLECTION OF INBELKULT PUBLICATIONS

The activities and achievements of the institution are reflected in various historical sources. But the main ones are the scientific works of Inbelkult employees, many of which have not lost their scientific significance even today. Our library, as the successor of the Inbelkult Library, has the largest collection of these works. We have digitised the entire collection and are presenting it to our readers. This digital collection is a major part of our project.

Inbelkult publications are valuable not only as academic, but also as cultural heritage, as written testimonials of the era. Behind every book and behind each of its copies is a story to be discovered by a patient reader. Employees of the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts of the Central Science Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will tell you these stories.

The pace of Inbelkult activities was driven by noble dreams, professional service, critical mind, actions and authority of the Belarusian intelligentsia, which had a clear goal and a well-defined position on the issue of the nation’s national and cultural revival and development of science in Belarus. To make these pictures more eloquent, we have added excerpts from archival documents, memoirs and official publications.

ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS
ON INBELKULT LIBRARY

It is impossible to imagine Inbelkult without its library. Together with the Institute, it grew and developed, overcoming difficulties. Its growth and development can be observed in archival documents kindly provided by the Central Science Archive of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. It was on the basis of the Inbelkult Library that the Yakub Kolas Central Science Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was created, which is offering this project to our readers.
